About Qwikforms:
Congratulations! You have PageStream (or you probably wouldn't be
reading this) and Qwikforms, You now have a handle on the world of
desktop publishing, Qwikforms is designed to help you to improve the
look and scope of your work, and to get more out of your desktop
publishing system quickly. This booklet is divided into seven topics:
"About Qwikforms," "Qwikstart," "Design," "Fonts," "Printing,"
"Tips" and "Filenames," Qwikstart is for those who want to start
immediately, if not sooner, Design describes our approach to
designing forms with PageStream, Fonts, Printing, and Tips include a
few things we learned the hard , way that may be of help to you,
Filenames is a brief description of each Qwikform, Further
information about new Qwikforms not listed or machine specific
information will be found in a document called README.DOC to be
printed with PageStream
Qwikstart:
1. Open a Qwikform.
Load PageStream, select the Open command from the File menu and
choose a Qwikform.
2. Save the Qwikform under a new name.
Select the Save As command from the File menu and enter the new
name. This will insure that any modifications you make will not alter
the original Qwikform, or any other Qwikform you may have open.
3. Examine the Qwikform and modify the fonts as necessary.
Before putting any Qwikform to use, be sure you delete the Filename
of the form from the upper left hand corner. Change fonts if desired.
4. Delete unwanted text and graphics.
If the text you want to delete is in a column. hi lite it with the cursor,
then select Delete from the Edit menu. If the text is an object, click
on the Object icon, select the text object, then select Delete. To
preserve the font, use the backspace key to delete the text.
5. Load new text. graphics and logos.
Type your text directly onto a Qwikform or use the Import Text
option from the File menu to load new text from another file Use the
Import Graphics option to load in new graphics or logos. If the graphic
is an object, use the Object option in the Choose Type box after
clicking on the File Type. If the clip art is not an object, cut out the
part of the drawing you want by holding down the mouse.

button and dragging a box around it. Then select Copy from the menu.
Now close the art screen by clicking on the box in the upper left hand
comer, click anywhere on the Qwikform, then select Paste from the
Edit menu. Now place the clip where you want it and click the mouse
button to paste it down.
6. Save the finished modified Qwikform.
The Save command from the File Menu will automatically save your
Qwikform under the name you gave it in Step 2. Always save the form
before printing.
Designs
In designing our Qwikforms we have tried to anticipate a variety of
needs. Many of these forms were created for our own business use.
Feel free to modify them in any way you like. We have also included
different styles of similar forms (eg.. INVOICE forums) Examine all
versions before making your choice of style. Maintaining a consistent
style among the forms you use will help your business project a
uniform image
Layout of columns, making boxes, and importing "Greek" text is easy
with PageStream "Greek" in this case means random letters that have
no meaning. They are used to show sample font size and spacing
before the main text is inserted. We have included a page of
"Greeking" in a file called LOREM.TXT for you to import whenever
necessary. This copy will greatly aid evaluation of the design of your
documents.
There are many books available on desktop publishing that will give
you much more information than we have included here. Of course
the whole reason behind Qwikforms is to give you some solutions
immediately and to save you having to accumulate (and study) lots of
costly books just to get a simple task accomplished.
Fonts:
In Qwikforms we have used only the three fonts that came with the
original PageStream Helvetica (sans serif. mechanical and highly
efficient). Tymes (serif. highly readable). and Letter Gothic (rarely
used). There are a few forms that could benefit from the use of
difFerent fOnts. such as Script for cards and advertisements. and Old
English fOr some legal forms and certificates. We recommend using as
few fonts as possible in a document. When you use more than two or
three the document tends to have a broken look. Fewer fonts also
helps preserve continuity and credibility. One Of. our computers
contains 145 fonts. yet we use only Times and Helvetica 99% of the
time.

Printing:
From the inexpensive 9 pin printer to the megabucks Linotronic L300
machine. you will get excellent results with PageStream. We use the
Hewlett Packard DeskJet for most of our work. The resolution of a
laser printer or DeskJet (300 dots per inch) is fine for many
documents. However. most professional applications (especially those
using the light and italic styles) will require the sharper, clearer images
of the higher output ( 1200 or 2400 dots per inch0 Linotronic
machines.
This is how we prepare our documents to become advertising or
booklet copy:
Select the Configure Printer option under Global menu. Load
PSCRIPT.PRT (output driver). Select Disk File next to SEND TO
(also under Configure Printer), then print document. File will be
printed to disk. Copy this file to an IBM MSDOS formatted disk (or a
MacIntosh disk) and deliver to a service bureau to be printed on a
Linotronic machine. (The file can also be sent by modem) The service
bureau usually charges $3 to $10 a page (1991 rates). To find one in
your area refer to "Typesetting" in your Yellow Pages.
Tips:
Use Alt E to resize objects
Use Helvetica for clarity in small font sizes (under 8 point)
Use 12pt x 12pt grid for forms to be filled in with a typewriter or on
screen with I 2 point fonts
Use kearning for appearance not for crowding information
Compose copy with a word processing system and save as an ascii file
Consider white space. That means don't fill up the page just because
you can
Allow time for corrections and changes of your document
Text that is formatted Block Left is better for narrow columns than
Character Justified flush both left and right
